The UK’s government have officially brought forward the ban on petrol and diesel vehicles sales from 2035 to 2030 – including cars and vans.
What does the ban mean for UK drivers?
By 2030, UK drivers will no longer be able to buy petrol or diesel vehicles. This comes as the government pledge to reach their net-zero target by 2050 to reduce the rate of national carbon emissions contributed to by fuel vehicles being driven throughout the UK.
The initial ban will solely focus on fuel vehicles, so some hybrid cars and vans will continue to be manufactured and sold by dealerships until 2035. This is expected to include full hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles with the longest zero-emission range, according to the Department for Transport.
The government are yet to place a ban on the resale of used fuel vehicles meaning they’ll still be available to buy on forecourts after the ban.
At present, UK drivers will be able to continue driving their existing vehicles regardless of whether they’re fuel, electric or hybrid. The restriction only affects new cars registered after that date. Cars registered after 2030 will have to be zero-emission vehicles.
